Parallel event acknowledges advances on the water management issue at Rio+20

Representatives of Latin America and the Caribbean gathered on 20 June at Solar da Imperatriz, in Rio, for a Meeting of the National Committees of the International Hydrological Programme (IHP). They acknowledged that Rio+20 - the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development is advancing on important issues concerning water management (+ info).

Held every three years, the Sixth World Water Forum bring together heads of state and government, technical and ministerial representatives from different countries, companies and NGOs of various kinds on the development of solutions for water resources management focusing on thematics such as effective access to water and sanitation, transboundary cooperation and increasing involvement of local authorities.

XVI IHPNC Workshop - Chile 2012 (Santiago, Chile, November 8, 2012)

Annually, the Chilean IHP Committee organizes workshop that gather together policy makers, researchers and technicians on water resources to analyze, discuss and exchange different views and experiences on the subject. This time, the Conference XVI Chilean IHP has the slogan "New Sources of water: the challenge of increasing the water supply in Chile" (+ info).

Short films contest in Uruguay

"Conta en corto" invites Uruguayan youths between 14 to 29 years to participate in a short films contest that this year is focused on youth participation and environment protection. Participants will be able to raise awareness, inform or tell stories of people who can serve as an example of environment protection. The contest is organized by the United Nations System in Uruguay, together with institutions and organizations which are working on environmental, youth, culture and communication issues. The call is open until September 13, 2012 (+ info).

Open nominations for International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) Awards

The IAHS supports two international Awards every year. The first one, The International Hydrology Prize, awarded together with UNESCO and WMO, which distinguishes a person who has made an outstanding contribution to hydrology such as confers on the candidate universal recognition of his or her international stature. The second one, The IAHS Tison Award, promotes excellence in research by young hydrologists. The Award will be granted for an outstanding paper published by IAHS in a period of two years previous to the deadline for nominations. Nominations for these awards should be sending no later than December 31, 2012 (+ info).

First Regional Consultation of GEF Project ??Groundwater Governance: A Global Framework for Country Actions? (Montevideo, 18-20 April 2012)

The First Regional Consultation of the new project on Groundwater Governance: A Global Framework for Country Actions will involve the Latin America and Caribbean region and will be held in Montevideo from 18th to 20th April 2012. This project is the result of the fruitful cooperation among the UNESCO International Hydrological Programme (IHP), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH) and the World Bank.

The overall project objective is to increase awareness on the paramount importance of a sound management of groundwater resources to prevent and reverse the global water crisis.

Workshop in Lima, Peru: The Impact of Glaciers Retreat in the Andes

The International Hydrological Programme (IHP), the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) and the UNESCO Representation in Peru under the auspices of the Government of Flanders in Belgium are organizing the Introductory Workshop "The Impact of Glaciers Retreat in the Andes: Multidisciplinary International Network for Adaptation Strategies" to take place on 29-30 May, 2012. Strengthening capacities in water sciences supported by UNESCO

UNESCO Director-General, Ms. Irina Bokova, made an official visit to Uruguay from 13 to 15 September. During the visit, among the various activities in the agenda, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between UNESCO and the National Agency for Research and Innovation (ANII) from Uruguay in order to establish official cooperation in the field of science. In addition, it also took place the ceremony of award of five scholarships for students in environmental engineering, specialized in sanitary engineering, result of an agreement signed in June this year between Institute for Water Education (UNESCO-IHE) and ANII (+ info).

INA - INMAC Foundation scholarship on Erosion - Sedimentation awarded to a Bolivian Engineer

Ruby Isabel Aguilar King, winner of the scholarship with Mr. Paul Spaletti (Fluvial Hydraulics Programme) and the President of INA.

Under the auspices of the IHP-LAC ISI Programme, the National Water Institute (INA) and the INMAC Foundation awarded the scholarship on erosion-sedimentation for Latin American postgraduate students, to Civil Engineer Ruby Isabel Rey Aguilar, from La Paz, Bolivia. The two month scholarship will take place at the Fluvial Hydraulics Programme of the Hydraulics Laboratory of INA. (+info)

IX IHP-LAC National Committees and Focal Points Meeting and side events (Juan Dolio, Dominican Republic, 28-29 June, 2011)

In order to carry out the activities envisaged in the biennial IHP-LAC workplan, the Ninth Meeting of the IHP-LAC National Committees and Focal Points was held, hosted by the National Institute of Water Resources of the Dominican Republic. This instance counted with the active participation of 26 Member States representatives and more than 60 professionals involved in water resources of our region. This important framework was favourable for the organization of a series of side events such as CEHICA Executive Council Meeting; the GRAPHIC International Seminar "Groundwater resources, climate change, and human pressures: assessment and adaptation in Latin America and the Caribbean", G- WADI Meeting; UNESCO Chairs and Water Centres Meeting; PCCP Workshop "Conflict Prevention and Cooperation in Water Management in Latin America", National Workshop for journalists on Water Resources Management and Sustainable Development; and the signature of the agreement CEHICA-ICIWaRM.

Photo contest "Digan Agua" awards

On Friday June 3rd took place the awards ceremony of the photo contest "Digan Agua" organized by the National Water Direction of Uruguay with the support of IHP-LAC, which aimed to promote and encourage the importance of water as a source of life, a culture of caring for water as a scarce resource and the development of photography as a form of social expression. With an active participation, which reached 151 photographic series representative of all Uruguay, the exhibition of winning photographs will be exhibited during the month of June in the Café de la Diaria (Soriano 770, Montevideo). HEC Modeling Training Course

On 29th March finished the HEC Modelling Training Course jointly organized by the International Centre on Hydroinformatics (CIH) and the International Center for Integrated Water Resources Management (ICIWARM), both UNESCO Category II Centres with the support of the IHP-LAC. The course covered topics such as Hydrologic Modeling with HEC-HMS, Hydrologic Modeling of River with HEC-RAS and Reservoir Modeling with HEC-ResSim. UNESCO-WET Water and Education Programme launched in Jamaica

UNESCO - WET Water and Education Jamaica
Minister of Water and Housing, Hon. Dr. Horace Chang and Chairman of the Water Resources Authority (WRA), Dr. Parris Lyew-Ayee, during the launching.

On occasion of the World Water Day (22th March), the Water Resources Authority of Jamaica (WRA) launched the UNESCO-WET Water and Education Programme aimed at promoting the awareness, knowledge and appreciation for water resources among Jamaican children. This programme is implemented both with  formal and non-formal educators from kindergarten to secondary level  (+info)

Publication: "Erosion processes and sedimntation in bed and river basins, volume I"

On August 20, 2010 in the Secretariat of Water Resources of Argentina, Buenos Aires, was held the launching of the book "Erosion processes and sedimentation in bed and river basins, volume I", a scientific contribution by the ISI Programme (International Sediment Initiative) of the International Hydrological Programme. This program has been featured in the IHP Intergovernmental Council in Paris, which warned that erosion processes and sedimentation, and river basins management in rivers and water bodies, are increasingly important at a global level, and also highlighted the relevance these processes have from a socio-economic and environmental perspective. Director-General of UNESCO on the occasion of the Closure of 19th Session of IHP's Intergovernmental Council

On the occasion of the closure of the 19th session of the Intergovernmental Council of the International Hydrological Programme, the Director-General of UNESCO, Ms. Irina Bokova addressed Council. She started by highlighting many of the important initiatives that UNESCO is carrying out through its unique mandate to take on the water challenge from a holistic perspective, which addresses the topic through an interdisciplinary approach. Ms. Bokova emphasized the crosscutting nature of water, and its critical importance in achieving each of the eight MDGs, whether it's the battle against poverty or hunger, or ensuring universal education and gender equality.
