Sharp water-course rising and flooding are among the main threats of water-produced disasters in the Region of Latin America and the Caribbean. Therefore, the FRIEND-AMIGO LAC Project is trying to deepen knowledge and understanding of the hydrologic and atmospheric processes leading to floods and the conceptualization and characterization of this phenomenon and its causes in an evolving environment. The proposals thus include:
1. Deepening the knowledge on the origin and development of such kind of phenomena and strengthening the conceptual and methodological bases of the actions leading to a better response.
2. Sharing and helping improve the tools for its analysis and understanding.
3. Helping resolve aspects related to planning and organization of prevention, emergency management, and sharp water course rising, with the ultimate goal of reducing human life losses, material damages and the ensuing social and economic disturbances.
4. Promoting subprojects reflecting such objectives within the national contexts.
In order to achieve such goal, work is being done in a Project on Regionalization of daily maximum precipitation and flows in Latin America and the Caribbean, based on an experience developed by Costa Rica.
