The main objective of the International Hydrological
Programme (IHP) of UNESCO for Latin America and the Caribbean is to
improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of the region through
the scientific and technological development of water sciences using
a multi-objective and multi-dimensional holistic approach based on
the Dublin Principles, Agenda 21 - Chapter 18, Science for the XXI
Century-Budapest (Chapter 2.2), the Santa Cruz de la Sierra Declaration
(initiatives 47 to 57), and the declarations of the Third World Water
Forum in Kyoto, Japan.
The sixth phase of the IHP that comprises
the period 2002-2007 deals with the theme "Water Interactions:
Systems at risk and social challenges"

Plan
for the Seventh Phase of IHP (2008-2014)
The 35th
session of the IHP Bureau (Paris, June 2003) recommended
the initiation of the planning process of the programme's
7th Phase (2008-2014), emphasizing the importance of involving
the IHP National Committees through a series of consultations.
REGIONAL
MEETING OF IHP NATIONAL COMMITTEES
A regional meeting
of the IHP National Committees of Europe and North America
(UNESCO electoral groups I and II) will be held from 22
to 23 March 2004 at the Academy of Finland in Helsinki.
